A OBD-II Bi-Directional scanner is used for reading the codes, interacting with the various systems and testing those systems and individual components and then finally clearing the codes once you have fixed the problem. Basic scanners will allow you to read the codes and clear most of them. Bi-directional scanners do all that as well and allow you to dig deeper into the various systems and interact with the various sensors, actuators and computers to help you "nail down" the fault precisely.
It could be considered a minor or a major problem depending upon the root cause the fault. A minor easy to fix problems can become a large expensive problems if it is ignored long enough.
A warning fault light is just that, it's a warning that there is a problem and if you ignore the warning light long enough it can result in extra damage to the vehicle under certain conditions. A stop engine light is a warning that serious damage could now be occurring or that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. If the stop engine light comes on immediately pull over to a safe spot and shut off the engine and get help.
That's a "loaded" question that can not be easily answered because for any given fault there can be many different seemingly unrelated reasons for the fault and also so many different items that could potentially need replacing or repairing. A good bi-directional scanner will go a long way in helping you "nail down" the problem and will get you pointed in the right direction.
Go to a store that has a wide range of parts and tools that also has hassle free returns. Different vehicle manufactures build their vehicles differently using different components which make doing a universal "fix for all" for the generic Code of P0406 too wide of a topic to cover so their is no real universal fix to a trouble code of P0462. Trouble code diagnosis is a time-consuming task that demands thoroughness, accuracy and the proper scan tools. The P0462 code has several possible causes each specific to each manufacturer and model so you will need to narrow down what the problem may be and eliminate by what is not the problem by testing and logical problem troubleshooting.
A code of P0462 generally indicates a fuel level sensor problem which may have several possible solutions. Often the fuel tank sending unit is replaced or the contacts for the fuel level sensor is cleaned and replaced. Others have replaced the instrumentation cluster hoping to solve this problem.
Gone are the days when simple circuits such as that of a fuel sensor has gone away and have been replaced with integrated circuits where the power and the return signal which goes to the fuel gauge may now have to travel threw several unrelated modules. If any of the modules that the circuit follows fail or develop problems will also cause problems for the fuel gauge circuit; everything is now interconnected.
Pulling a code of P0462 is an indication that the Fuel Level Sensor “A” Circuit has a low voltage. The cause of the fault could be from damaged or defective sensors, wiring harness, connectors, fuel sending unit, etc. Most people just assume the fuel level sensor is defective and replace it which in the majority of the cases often won't fix the problem in vehicles made by Nissan and Infinity.
This is a common Infinity problem that has been reported on many G35 and the G37 and has just recently happened to my 2014 Q60. The fuel tank gauge becomes inaccurate indicating that the fuel level is much higher than it really is and it also sets a code of P0462.
Usually the cause of the fuel gauge being inaccurate can be traced to the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank becoming defective or the sensor level contacts become corroded and needs to be cleaned. If your fuel gauge is reading inaccurately and THERE IS NO P0462 CODE SET then yes the problem is probably in the fuel tank level sensor.
Many owners of Infinity G35, G37, Q60 and others that have the check engine light code of P0462 the problem is usually a loose resistor which is located on the AC amplifier Control Unit. This module is located in the center console behind the touch screen. You will need to replace the AC Control Module or fix your module by soldering the resistors (sometimes more than one) cracked connection to the board. The resistors are very small so some skill and the proper soldering gun and accessories will be necessary to do the job properly. If you don't have the skills and the required tools it might be a good idea to take the board to a electronics repair shop and have an expert repair the board properly without damaging to board.
Not all the AC amplifier control modules are interchangeable so be careful to get the same module or a capable model number if you decide to replace the module with a new one or pick one from a salvage yard . If you put in the wrong one things might not work properly or at all.

For parts I can no longer afford to get my parts from the local (very expensive) dealership which will often need to have the part ordered in (takes about a week usually). To save money and time I have found it easier to get it from Amazon where the selection is better, it arrive quicker and its cheaper than the local suppliers.

For parts I can no longer afford to get my parts from the local (very expensive) dealership which will often need to have the part ordered in (takes about a week usually). To save money and time I have found it easier to get it from Amazon where the selection is better, it arrive quicker and its cheaper than the local suppliers.
