(Mass or Air Flow "A" Circuit Range/performance)
...Read MoreAn error code of P0103 indicates that there may be an issue with your mass airflow sensor (MAF). The code of P0101 does not indicate that the MAF sensor has to be replaced so don't run out and buy a new MAF sensor yet. A P0101 code indicates that there might be an issue with the MAF circuit and for some reason it is reading or returning a value to the engine computer in the range that the engine computer was not expecting to see, the MAF for some reason is returning a value which seems to be out of its intended and expected range.
Other codes may also pop up ranging from P0100-P0109, P0505-P0507, and P2096-P2099 which often appear simultaneously with this code because of how the many different vehicles sensors and systems are joined together and share information.
Some of the more common symptoms which indicate a problem with the MAF circuit besides the annoying check engine light is a loss of engine power and responsiveness with lower than usual fuel economy and an engine that may run rough.
As I stated before that a error code of P0101 indicates that there is probably an issue with your mass airflow sensor (MAF) but also don't be too quick to place the blame on and replace the MAF sensor in the hope of fixing a code of P0101. The problem could also be in the wiring harness or something else which seems to be totally unrelated.
I had the same problem of a P0101 code with the check engine light which was was almost always on with a 2011 Nissan Frontier since it was almost new starting way back in 2012. I cleaned the MAF sensor several times, then replacing the MAF sensor with a aftermarket one. When that didn't fix the problem I wrongfully assumed that the aftermarket MAF sensor was also faulty so I replaced that one with a even more pricy OEM Nissan MAF sensor which fixed nothing. I checked the wiring harness, the connectors, brought it back to the dealership, etc with no luck so I just gave up on fixing the problem....
In 2014 I bought a 2014 Infinity Q60 and I also replaced the factory OEM air filters with new K&N filters just as I did with the Frontier. Seven years later the Q60 developed the same problems as the Nissan frontier, it lost power as if the engine were in limp mode and I got the P0101 code. A restart of the engine often fixed the problem for a little while but is always came back. I did the same stuff I did on the Nissan Frontier such as cleaning and replacing the MAF sensors. Fortunately I didn't need to buy any more MAF sensors since I had several new MAF sensors from the Nissan frontier which shares many of its sensors and other parts with the Infinity Q60 including the taller version oil filter.
Trial and error and a new advanced OBD2 scanner finally lead me to suspect the throttle body which was tested by the scanner and proved not to be defective; the problem was that it was just dirty. Dirty enough to restrict the air flow around the throttle plate which made the engine computer "think" that the MAF was defective. After cleaning out the throttle bodies and clearing the P0101 code all the driving issues and codes went alway.
When using K&N air filters which are filters that are soaked with oils there is always a chance that some of the oils may blow off the filter and make its way to the MAF sensor and all the way to the throttle body where it could cause some problems. I still use the K&N filters and have save a lot of $$ by cleaning and reusing the air filter instead of replacing the filters. Air filters for the Infinity Q60 are not widely available and they are also expensive to buy. The cleaning and reusing the K&N filters make a lot of sense especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time. With that in mind also be aware that the MAF sensor and the throttle body may require some extra cleaning than usual.
Also after cleaning the throttle body on restarting the Q60 (which I also experienced with the Frontier) is that the idle speeds jumped to over 2000 RPM and remained there until I did a forced idle speed relearn with the scanner tool. Without the proper scan tool I would have had to deal with the high RPMs until the car would eventually do a relearn and lower the RPMs which could take up to a week for it to do. Without a good scanner to help you "nail down" the problem it can become very expensive if your diagnosis method is just to keep replacing parts until you replace the right part. A Advanced OBD2 scanners is a must for working on a modern automobile and it can do a lot more than just forcing a relearn of the throttle idle and diagnosing and clearing codes.
That's a "loaded" question that can not be easily answered because for any given fault there can be many different seemingly unrelated reasons for the fault and also so many different items that could potentially need replacing or repairing. A good bi-directional scanner will go a long way in helping you "nail down" the problem and will get you pointed in the right direction.
Go to a store that has a wide range of parts and tools that also has hassle free returns. For parts I can no longer afford to get my parts from the local (very expensive) dealership which will often need to have the part ordered in (takes about a week usually). To save money and time I have found it easier to get it from Amazon where the selection is better, it arrive quicker and its cheaper than the local suppliers.

Go to a store that has a wide range of parts and tools that also has hassle free returns. For parts I can no longer afford to get my parts from the local (very expensive) dealership which will often need to have the part ordered in (takes about a week usually). To save money and time I have found it easier to get it from Amazon where the selection is better, it arrive quicker and its cheaper than the local suppliers.
...Read Less(System Too Rich Bank 1)
...Read MoreIndicates that your vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a air fuel ratio that is running too rich
The engine may run rough, misfire and have a loss of engine power and poor fuel economy.
A OBD-II Bi-Directional scanner is used for reading the codes, interacting with the various systems and testing those systems and individual components and then finally clearing the codes once you have fixed the problem. Basic scanners will allow you to read the codes and clear most of them. Bi-directional scanners do all that as well and allow you to dig deeper into the various systems and interact with the various sensors, actuators and computers to help you "nail down" the fault precisely.
It could be considered a minor or a major problem depending upon the root cause the fault. A minor easy to fix problems can become a larger more expensive problems if it's ignored long enough.
A warning fault light is just that, it's a warning that there is a problem and if you ignore the warning light long enough it can result in extra damage to the vehicle under certain conditions. A stop engine light is a warning that serious damage could now be occurring or that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. If the stop engine light comes on immediately pull over to a safe spot and shut off the engine and get help.
That's a "loaded" question that can not be easily answered because for any given fault there can be many different seemingly unrelated reasons for the fault and also so many different items that could potentially need replacing or repairing. A good bi-directional scanner will go a long way in helping you "nail down" the problem and will get you pointed in the right direction.

...Read MoreThe limits of how lean or rich the fuel/air mixture can be made (trims) have been achieved, there is no more room for the PCM to make any further adjustment.
Some symptoms include a loss of engine power, poor fuel economy, stalling and a rough running engine.
