OBD-II Body Diagnostic Trouble Codes

OBD-II Body Codes (B Codes)

Body Codes (B) usually refers to the components INSIDE of the passenger compartment. When the system detects a "problem" a code is set and the check engine light will come on. To read the code you can use either a OBD Code Reader or a OBD Scan Tool which plugs into the OBD port.

OBD-II Body trouble codes start with the letter "B". These codes indicate a problem with a system or component related to the vehicle's body, which generally includes interior and exterior electronic features that aren't part of the powertrain or chassis. Some common categories of OBD-II Body (B) Trouble Codes:

  • Airbag System SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) - Sensors, deployment circuits, occupant detection.
  • Anti-theft System - Alarms, immobilizers.
  • Body Control Module (BCM) - Controls various functions like power windows, power locks, lighting, wipers, etc.
  • Anti-theft Systems - Alarms, immobilizers.
  • Climate Control (HVAC) - Fan motors, actuators, sensors.
  • Instrument Panel - Gauges, indicators, warning lights.
  • Lighting - Interior lights, exterior lights (excluding those directly related to engine function or safety like headlights in some cases).
  • Power Windows and Locks - Motors, switches, circuits.
  • Seat Systems - Power seats, heated seats, seatbelt pretensioners.
  • Wiper and Washer Systems - Motors, switches.

  • The difference In Generic OBD-II (OBD2) Codes Verses Manufacturer Specific OBD2 Trouble Codes

Generic codes are defined in the OBD-II standards and are general codes which will be used by manufactures to discribe a common fault. Manufacture specific codes are added by the manifacturer when there is no generic code that is specific enough to discribe the issue or problem.

  • B0xxx - Generic Body Codes
  • B1xxx - Manufacturer-specific Body Codes
  • B2xxx - Manufacturer-specific Body Codes
  • B3xxx - Generic Body Codes

  • Types Of OBD-II Code Scanners

A inexpensive basic OBD2 code reader is a basic tool which is usually limited to just being able to read most of the stored trouble codes and being capable of clearing most of the stored trouble codes. A bi-directional scanner does so much more than a basic code reader due to it being capable of bi-directional or two way communication with ALL the vehicles various computer systems and sub systems. With a bi-directional scanner you can reset the codes and do advanced tests (turn systems on or off, etc) on all of the various systems and components which you can not do on a basic OBD-II reader.

What are some of the possible faults that will cause a OBD-II diagnostic trouble code of B0001?

  • Indicates a possible failure in the driver-side airbag
  • Indicates a possible failure in the clock-spring
  • Indicates possible defective wiring or connectors
  • Indicates a possible failure in the restraints control module

How do I diagnose a issue with a OBD-II diagnostic trouble code of B0001?

A OBD-II Bi-Directional scanner is used for reading the codes, interacting with the various systems and testing those systems and individual components and then finally clearing the codes once you have fixed the problem. Basic scanners will allow you to read the codes and clear most of them. Bi-directional scanners do all that as well and allow you to dig deeper into the various systems and interact with the various sensors, actuators and computers to help you "nail down" the fault precisely.

How serious of a problem is a check engine light and a OBD-II diagnostic trouble code of B0001?

It could be considered a minor or a major problem depending upon the root cause the fault. A minor easy to fix problems can become a large expensive problems if it is ignored long enough.

Can I still drive my vehicle with a check engine light and a OBD-II diagnostic trouble code of B0001?

A warning fault light is just that, it's a warning that there is a problem and if you ignore the warning light long enough it can result in extra damage to the vehicle under certain conditions. A stop engine light is a warning that serious damage could now be occurring or that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. If the stop engine light comes on immediately pull over to a safe spot and shut off the engine and get help.

What are some of the possible faults that will cause a OBD-II diagnostic trouble code of B0030?

  • Indicates that the vehicle's computer has detected an issue with the control circuit for the second-row left-side airbag.
  • This indicates a possible problem with the control circuit
  • This indicates a possible defective wiring or connectors

How do I diagnose a issue with a OBD-II diagnostic trouble code of B0030?

A OBD-II Bi-Directional scanner is used for reading the codes, interacting with the various systems and testing those systems and individual components and then finally clearing the codes once you have fixed the problem. Basic scanners will allow you to read the codes and clear most of them. Bi-directional scanners do all that as well and allow you to dig deeper into the various systems and interact with the various sensors, actuators and computers to help you "nail down" the fault precisely.

How To Fix Code B1054 - Without Draining Your Wallet

The airbag light comes on telling you that there is a problem with the SRS system. The problem could be with any of the many air bags, sensors or wiring harnesses and connectors in the vehicle. If your like me and can't afford to have a dealership work on your vehicle so you will also need to fix the problem yourself. Airbags can cost thousand and most of the connectors and special sensors including crash sensors, clock-spring, seatbelt and seat sensors, airbags etc are only available from the dealer so they will be very expensive to buy. Because I can't afford to replace the wrong part the first thing you need to get is a good Bidirectional scanner to save money in the long run. The SRS system has a lot of components that could fail and it is imposable to diagnose and fix a system that complicated without the help of a up to date bidirectional scanner.

    Bi-Directional Scanner

Basic scanners will allow you the ability to clear some of the codes and give you a vague diagnosis of what the issue is. Better Bidirectional scanners can go deeper into the system and can run tests on the systems which can help you pinpoint much more accurately where the fault is. My older scanner only indicated that there was a problem in the SRS system and it would allow me to clear the code just so that the codes could reappear again. My old scanner could not tell me which air bag was at fault. I also had other problems and codes which I did not know how to fix on two different vehicles so I finally "bite the bullet" and bought a new much more expensive scanner which I now wonder how I ever did without.

Code B1054 - Drivers Side Air Bag Or Is It The Steering wheel Clock Spring

The scanner pulls the code B1054 which is the generic code for a open circuit in the drivers side air bag. This does not indicate that the air bag itself is defective and it only indicates that there is a problem with the circuit going to the steering wheel airbag or in the steering wheel airbag itself. Clearing the code and restarting the vehicle and letting it run did not cause the code to re appear; it only came back on when turning the steering wheel back and forth which suggesting a broken or loose wire in the clock spring.

I replaced the clock spring and cleared the code and all was good again with no more air bag faults.
